FLASHBACK

INT. LONDON SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - NIGHT

[Scene opens on a long hallway with LIGHTNING and THUNDER outside.]

[Camera moves BACKWARDS to reveal a young girl CROUCHING down LISTENING to an ARGUMENT.]

[Pan to the left reveals three men in a study room.]

                        DOCTOR 1
         Madness. There's no other
word for it. And it will be
         your undoing.
                        DOCTOR 2
         You must understand, Gregory,
         the board has been patient
         with you, but their
         generosity has limits.
                        GREGORY
         As does their imagination!
         Can you not fathom the
secrets we are on the verge
         of unlocking?
                        DOCTOR 1
         By accepting your hysterical
         and outlandish case studies
         as fact? You presume too
         much, Gregory. I believe
         we're done here.

[Doctor 2 SIGHS.]

[The men begin to LEAVE.]

                        DOCTOR 2
         Try to see the larger
         implications, Gregory.
                        GREGORY
I am, sir. The question is,
         are you?
                        DOCTOR 2
         You're a talented doctor,
         Gregory. It would be a
         tragedy if you lost your
         license to practice.

[The two gentlemen LEAVE down the hallway.]

                        DOCTOR 2
                 (to Helen)
         Miss Magnus.

[Helen STANDS UP and WALKS to her father.]

                        GREGORY
I'm sorry you had to hear
         that.
                        YOUNG HELEN
         I don't understand. Why are
they always so angry at you?
                        GREGORY
         They're not angry,
         sweetheart. They're afraid.
                        YOUNG HELEN
         Of what?
                        GREGORY
Oh, of being wrong, mainly. -
Just put it out of your mind.
                        YOUNG HELEN
-How can you say that? -They
         mean to end your career.
                        GREGORY
         -Helen.... -Let it go.
                        YOUNG HELEN
         -Please, father. What have
you done to make them so
         afraid of you?

[Gregory SIGHS.]

                        YOUNG HELEN
         Tell me.
                        GREGORY
         I can't.

[Gregory moves back into his study and CLOSES the double doors.]

[Helen is left DESPONDENT in the hallway as LIGHTNING FLASHES and THUNDER CRACKS.]

END FLASHBACK

EXT. ISLAND - NIGHT

Oilean of Arracht, North Sea
one hundred miles off the coast of Scotland

[Cut to a DARK WINDY NIGHT in a graveyard with LIGHTNING FLASHING.]

                        WILL
I said, are you sure this is
         it?
                        MAGNUS
         Keep your voice down! We're
         trying to remain undetected.
         That does require a modicum
         of silence.

[Magnus and Will are SITTING on the ground as Magnus LOOKS THROUGH a small SPYGLASS at something in the distance.]

                        WILL
         Modicum. Right.
                        WILL
Why are we hiding? We're on
an island in the middle of
         nowhere. And it's a crypt,
         not the Pentagon.
                        MAGNUS
         A crypt potentially
         containing an elixir capable
         of prolonging life
         for centuries. Such secrets are
         rarely left unguarded.
                        WILL
-Yeah, but why can't we just --
                        MAGNUS
         -Look.

[Magnus HANDS Will the spyglass.]

[Will SIGHS and LOOKS at a nearby cave, spotting some CLOAKED and HOODED creatures.]

                        MAGNUS
Keepers of the dead. Best be
         avoided if at all possible.
                        WILL
         Right.

[Magnus LOOKS across the way to an IMPATIENT looking Ashley.]

[A short but emphatic HAND SIGNAL conversation ensues.]

[This is an interpretation of the hand signals.]

                        ASHLEY
         I'm going (straight) in.
                        MAGNUS
Hold. You. Go around. Then in.
                        ASHLEY
         I'm going (straight) in.
                        MAGNUS
         We (need to) work together.
         (That's final)

[End interpretation.]

[Ashley SIGHS and WALKS around to the RIGHT.]

                        WILL
Okay. I got "I'm going in" and "go
around", but what was that wiggly
         one that you did?
                        MAGNUS
         "I'm cutting off your allowance."
         Let's go.

[Magnus DEPARTS to the LEFT and Will FOLLOWS her.]

[Cut to Ashley moving QUICKLY but STEALTHILY through the graveyard.]

[Cut back to Magnus and Will MIRRORING Ashley's actions on the other side.]

                        MAGNUS
Take the other side. Draw them
         away if you can.
                        WILL
         -You're kidding, right?
                        MAGNUS
         -Go quickly, before they --

[Will is JUMPED by one of the keepers, more FOLLOW behind.]

[Magnus SHOOTS several keepers.]

                        MAGNUS
         Ashley?

[Ashley RUNS in SHOOTING but is GRABBED by a keeper.]

[Ashley's mind FLASHES BACK to being HELD HOSTAGES by Druitt.]

                        DRUITT (V.O.)
         My daughter.

[After FREEZING while she had the flashback, Ashley starts HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT with four keepers.]

[When she has DOWNED all four of the keepers, she DRAWS two pistols and commences to kill them all.]

EXT. OUTSIDE CRYPT

[Meanwhile Magnus SHOOT the keeper OFF of Will.]

                        ASHLEY
         Get down!

[Magnus, Will, and Ashley REGROUP outside of the crypt as they are ATTACKED on all sides by keepers. Lots of GUNSHOTS ensue.]

                        ASHLEY
I know this was not on the
         brochure!
                        MAGNUS
This is why we don't work with
         Ernest. His intel is hopeless!
         Ashley!

[Ashley moves to REPOSITION herself on her mother's side and all three pistols are used to clear the way to the crypt.]

                        MAGNUS
         Go to the crypt! Go!

[Will RUNS inside as Ashley GUARDS their rear.]

                        ASHLEY
         Mom!

[Magnus turns and again three pistols deliver their deadly load.]

INT. CRYPT

[Will ENTERS the crypt and SEES three stone coffins radiating out from a stone circle.]

[Will WALKS FORWARD towards the coffins and STEPS ONTO the CENTER of the stone circle which FILLS the pattern with a GREEN LIQUID.]

[The coffin lids SLIDE OPEN.]

EXT. OUTSIDE CRYPT

[Meanwhile Magnus and Ashley are still FENDING OFF the ATTACKING keepers.]

                        MAGNUS
         I'm going in!

[Ashley continues SHOOTING two handed while Magnus RUNS to the crypt.]

INT. CRYPT

                        MAGNUS
         Doctor!
                        WILL
This might be my first crypt, but
aren't they supposed to hold dead
         people?

[OVERHEAD VIEW of three young women INSIDE the stone coffins.]

Title sequence

[Cut to Sanctuary opening title sequence.]

Part II, Act I

Sanctuary
The Lost Webisodes part 2

INT. OLD CITY SANCTUARY - ELEVATOR

[Will is in an elevator DESCENDING to the lower levels.]

                        WILL
Yes, yes, I realize he's left me
         five messages. That's why I'm
         returning his call. Okay, okay.
When do you expect him back in the
office? No, no, no, don't page
him. I'll.... I'll call him back
         then. Okay, thank you.

[The elevator STOPS and Will EXITS.]

                        WILL
         -Hey.
                        ASHLEY
         -Hi.
                        WILL
-So, that was some mission, huh?
                        ASHLEY
         -Ghouls, crypt. -Standard fare.
                        WILL
-Uh, new guy. Still not sleeping.
No such thing as standard fare.
                        ASHLEY
         Great.
                        WILL
So, I was just wondering, um, how
         you doing? Since....
                        ASHLEY
Since I learned my dad was a time-
         travelling nutjob?
                        WILL
I was going to say "troubled
         soul", but....
                        ASHLEY
         Peachy. Thanks for asking.
                        WILL
Hey, uh.... You know, that's some
         pretty serious information to be
carrying around. If you ever want
to just, you know, sit down and
talk and kind of let it out, I'm
         here.
                        ASHLEY
Here's some advice about me. I'm
not big on "sharing". So just
         stick to helping the freaks.
         That's why you're here. Ciao.
                        WILL
         See you.

INT. OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - MEDICAL SCIENCE RESEARCH LAB

[Will WALKS into a LARGE room where Magnus has the three women LYING ON TOP of GURNEYS with a individual blue I.V. fluid drip attached to each woman; there is a fourth body COVERED UP.]

                        WILL
         The three not-so-dead women found
in coffins. -Just another day at
         the office.
                        MAGNUS
         -All three are comatose.
         Fortunately, brain functions and
vital organs seem to be intact.
                        WILL
         -So they're normal?
                        MAGNUS
-Near as I can tell. The scans
         aren't detecting any physical
anomalies, but they can only tell
us so much. I'm administering a
         time-released stimulant. It should
         bring them back to consciousness
         slowly, with as little physical
         trauma as possible.
                        WILL
         What about emotional trauma?
                        MAGNUS
         That's more your department, I
         should think. Until they awaken,
we have to rely on more
         traditional forensic methods. Now,
         this fellow.
                        WILL
         Fond memories.
                        MAGNUS
         These creatures detected our
         presence early and possessed
         unnatural speed and strength.
                        WILL
         -Definitely not normal.

[Magnus works at REMOVING the huge bone skull helmet the keeper is wearing.]

                        MAGNUS
-Not as you would define it, no. I
was about to gather some fluid
         samples. Care to assist?
                        WILL
Uh, I'd love to, but... ...I'd
better get back to my office and
         get the whole head-shrinking
         operation up and running.
                        MAGNUS
         As you wish.

EXT. OLD CITY - ALLEY

[Cut to Ashley WALKING around a corner of a building in a DARK and BADLY LIT alleyway.]

[She STOPS and TURNS AROUND as if she HEARD something then CONTINUES WALKING FORWARD.]

[Ashley TURNS AROUND QUICKLY and DRAWS a gun that POWERS UP with a HIGH SOUNDING WHINE and SHOOTS at a creature HIGH ABOVE her.]

[The gun MALFUNCTIONS, FAILING TO FIRE, and the creature JUMPS ON TOP of her; SCREECHING.]

                        ASHLEY
For crying out loud! Henry! Steve,
         get off.
                        STEVE
         -You okay, Ash?
                        ASHLEY
         -You need a mint. Henry!
                        HENRY
         -I know, I know, I know, I know.
                        ASHLEY
         -It didn't work.
                        HENRY
-Which is why we have dry runs.
                        ASHLEY
         -I could have died.
                        HENRY
From him? Come on. He's a puppy
         dog.

[Steve SNORTS.]

                        HENRY
         May I?

[Ashley HANDS Henry the weapon and he MAKES some ADJUSTMENTS to it.]

                        HENRY
         Full charge.... Minimum level....

[He then FIRES it at a building and KNOCKS some of the wall down as RUBBLE.]

                        HENRY
There you go. A calibration issue.
         These Long-Range Acoustic Devices
get a bit wonky when you jostle
         them, so....
                        ASHLEY
Henry, I do a lot of jostling when
         I work.
                        HENRY
So choose a different a different
weapon. I got a case of new tech
nines in the truck. They've still
got that new gun smell and
         everything.
                        STEVE
                 (pointing at the damage to
                 the building)
         That was minimum?
                        ASHLEY
I want my usual gear ready for
         Friday, including the LRADs.
         Calibrated to handle jostling.
                        HENRY
Okay, well, the regular stuff is
no problem, but the sonics, you're
         dreaming. Besides, these are only
good if you're going after -- No,
no, no, no, no. Wait a minute.
Wait a minute. You're not thinking
of trying to kill what I think
you're thinking of trying to kill.
                        ASHLEY
         Just make it happen, Henry.
                        HENRY
         Ash, that is a completely
         unsanctioned --
                        ASHLEY
         Friday.
                        HENRY
I'm going to tell your mother!
                        STEVE
         Suck up.

INT. OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - INFIRMARY

[Cut to the Sanctuary infirmary and the three UNCONCIOUS women.]

[One woman begins to WAKE up and SITS up SCREAMING.]

                        DANU
         No!

INT. OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - WILL'S OFFICE

[Cut to Will in his new Sanctuary office and he is TALKING on the phone.]

                        WILL
                 (in phone)
No, no, I'm not avoiding the
         question, sir. I just.... You
know, I think I need to some time
to, um, travel, and meet some new
people, and, you know, see things
         that I haven't...

[Book FALLS.]

                        WILL
                 (into phone)
...seen before. Uh, yes, sir. Yes.
So if you could just process --
Thank you. Thank you. And --

[DIAL TONE.]

                        WILL
So much for the letter of
         recommendation.
                        BIGFOOT
         -You're needed in the infirmary.
                        WILL
-Okay, new rule. Don't do that.

[Bigfoot CHUCKLES.]

INT. OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - INFIRMARY

[Cut to the infirmary and Will ENTERS; he is DISPLAYED in the security camera feed on the HANGING video monitors that Magnus has TURNED ON while she is EXAMINING the dead keeper.]

                        WILL
         Hi.
                        WILL
It's nice to see you're finally
         awake. I'm Doctor Zimmerman. Will.
Are you...? Are you hungry? What's
         your name?
                        WILL
         Can you understand anything I'm
saying? Hey, it's okay. It's okay.
         You're okay. You're in a safe
         place.

[The woman GRABS Will and HOLDS ONTO him as if for COMFORT, or is it?]

                        WILL
         Okay, okay. All right, you're
okay. You're in a safe place. Just
         relax.
                        DANU
         I... ...am Danu.
                        WILL
         So you can talk.
                        DANU
My sisters -- Tatha and Caird --
         are they...?
                        WILL
         They're fine. Your sisters are
fine. You just woke up first.
You're in a medical facility. We
brought you here after we found
you in a... ...dark place. Do you
have any idea how you ended up
         there?
                        DANU
         Creatures. They came to our
         village. They weren't human.
                        WILL
         Yeah, sounds familiar.
                        DANU
They took us with them, and
         then... ...I woke up here.
                        WILL
         Your village. Is there anyone
there -- your friends or family --
that we could contact? -Let them
         know you're alright?
                        DANU
         -I'm sorry, I just.... I can't
         remember.
                        WILL
Well, it's okay. You just take
         your time.
                        DANU
         This place.... It's like...
         ...nothing I've ever seen before.
There's.... There is light, but I
         see no candles. There's warmth,
but there's no fire, no sunlight.
                        WILL
Danu, before you and your sisters
were taken, how much do you
         remember?
                        DANU
I'm not certain. I.... At last
mass, we were mourning the loss of
         our priest to the miasmas.
                        WILL
         The miasmas?
                        DANU
It's a sickness that has cursed
         many villages surrounding us in
recent months. There is no cure.
                        WILL
         So you remember the miasmas.
         Anything else?
                        DANU
         Why can't I remember?
                        WILL
         Just give it time.

INT. OLD CITY SANCTUARY - UPPER LEVEL - ASHLEY'S BEDROOM

[Cut to Ashley's bedroom; she is PACKING for a trip, taking along a lot of weapons with her.]

                        MAGNUS
I understand you have quite the
         weekend planned.
                        ASHLEY
         Thank you, Henry.
                        MAGNUS
He called out of concern for your
         well-being, something you seem
         determined to sacrifice.
                        ASHLEY
You mean I'm going to get myself
killed. God, why can't you talk
         like a normal person?
                        MAGNUS
Ashley, I realize there are things
that need to be discussed between
         us --
                        ASHLEY
Sure, Mom. Let's bake treats and
bond and do each other's hair --
Right after I go kill a bunch of
         ghouls for sport.
                        MAGNUS
         Those creatures are on the
         contraband list for a reason.
         There are specific rules governing
         their capture.
                        ASHLEY
Well, a lot of things changed
since good old dad showed up.
                        MAGNUS
That changes nothing. -I had no
         reason --
                        ASHLEY
-When he had me prisoner.... Mom,
I froze on that island. Okay? I
         hesitated. Do you realize how
major a problem that is? For both
         of us.
                        MAGNUS
And you think that by going off on
         some insane hunt you'll suddenly
         overcome your fears? -Ashley --
                        ASHLEY
         -Mom, if I can't do that... ...I'm
not worth a damn to anybody, am I?
                        MAGNUS
         Please don't do this.

EXT. OLD CITY SANCTUARY - NIGHT - RAIN

[An external door OPENS at the REAR of the Sanctuary facility and a motorcycle ROARS OUT.]

[Magnus's voice is heard as we get a close up of Ashley RIDING her motorcycle.]

                        MAGNUS (V.O.)
         These creatures exhibit a
         terrifying propensity for
         violence. Any future encounters
with them must be undertaken with
         extreme caution.

INT. OLD CITY SANCTUARY - LOWER LEVEL - DISSECTION ROOM

[Cut to Magnus in a lab DISSECTING the dead keeper.]

                        MAGNUS
         Physiology appears human in base
         form, though significant anomalies
to the face and torso indicate the
possibility of mutation at a base
         genetic level.
                        WILL
Ugh. Okay, you need to.... You
need to put a sock on the door or
         something before you do that.
                        MAGNUS
         He's breathtaking, isn't he?
                        WILL
-Yeah, that's one way of putting
         it.
                        MAGNUS
         -How are our guests doing?
                        WILL
Confused. at least the one who's
awake is. She mentioned a disease
that was killing people in her
         village, called the "miasmas",
         which translates from the Greek
         meaning "poisoned air".
                        MAGNUS
         -Plague, actually.
                        WILL
         -The Bubonic plague, specifically.
         However, the last reported serious
outbreak was in Scotland in 800 A.D.
                        MAGNUS
         -Meaning?
                        WILL
         -She's crazy.
                        MAGNUS
         Is that your professional opinion?
                        WILL
         Look, I know there's a lot of
things that are outside the realm
of our knowledge, blah blah blah.
But logically, if she were from
         800 A.D., she wouldn't speak
English the way that we do. I'm
         guessing that linguistics and
         grammar have evolved somewhat
         since then.
                        MAGNUS
         -Some would say "de-evolved".
                        WILL
-Whatever. The point is that we
         wouldn't understand her. Which
makes her a very sweet, very
         delusional woman.
                        MAGNUS
         Possibly.
                        WILL
If you have a theory, please share
         it with the class.
                        MAGNUS
The liquid we found the three of
         them in bears similar chemical
         properties to suspended animation
         formulae used by southern voodoo
         cults.

[Will LAUGHS.]

                        WILL
         The human body cannot survive
         intact for 1,200 years. I don't
care what kind of magic bath
         products you use.
                        MAGNUS
And I agree. So, these women are
either far more than they appear,
or, to use your incredibly clever
         vernacular....
                        WILL
         Crazy.
                        MAGNUS
         The question we should be
         asking...

[Cut to the infirmary as Magnus's voice continues.]

                        MAGNUS
...is why the keepers were so
anxious to stop us from getting
into that crypt. What is it about
these women that they don't want
         us to know?

[All three women are AWAKE now and they all JOIN HANDS.]

[A nearby tray of equipment begins to SHAKE and RATTLE.]

End credits

[Cut to Sanctuary end title card.]
